I have not been warned when renting a movie since I rented Lost Highway when I was 15 and the clerk told me to make sure my parents didn’t see it. I am about to watch Salò — supposedly the most disturbing movie of all time — and today, the clerk noticed that it was the first DVD I have rented since becoming a member of this store. I explained that I joined because the Brooklyn Public Library does not carry it. He said he watched it a few weeks ago and he has never had such a “strong reaction” to a film. He wished me luck and added “be careful.”
